Fire and flame for exclusive timber front doors with Shou Sugi Ban finishing
In the beginning was the fire:
an old tradition
from Japan
The 700-year-old Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technology was originally used for timber preservation: The one-sided burning creates a natural timber protection, while the timber surface takes on a completely new structure, colour and aesthetics. This creates works of art with a strong character, making every FENNEN front unmistakably unique.

The founder of Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban first became enamoured with this ingenious form of wood preservation during a trip to Japan and brought the traditional technique back to Europe. Today, Bert Kattenbroek runs Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban (= black wood) in Leersum in the Netherlands, where the Japanese tradition is combined with state-of-the-art technology. The team of craftsmen give the fire-treated wooden surfaces the perfect finish. Selected wooden planks from our are given a customised fire treatment at Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban before they are allowed to crown a FENNEN front door.
