Fire and flame for exclusive timber front doors with Shou Sugi Ban finishing

In the beginning was the fire:
an old tradition
from Japan

The 700-year-old Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technology was originally used for timber preservation: The one-sided burning creates a natural timber protection, while the timber surface takes on a completely new structure, colour and aesthetics. This creates works of art with a strong character, making every FENNEN front unmistakably unique.

Pieter Weijnen

Architect, captain, artisan, inventor,
Founder of Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban
Leersum, Netherlands

Pieter’s interest in this ingenious form of timber preservation was awoken at first sight during a stay in Japan and he brought the traditional technique to Europe with him. In the Dutch town of Leersum, he founded the Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban (= black timber) company, where the Japanese tradition is combined with the most modern technologies. In this way, the team of artists and craftsmen gives the fire-treated timber surfaces the perfect finish. Selected timber planks from our factory are given an individual fire finish at Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban before they can crown a FENNEN front door.
